Op-Ed in San Diego Union Tribune

Opinion: Converting single-family homes into multi-level apartment buildings will not lower San Diego rents

In an Op-Ed in the San Diego Union Tribune (June 14, 2021), NFABSD's Geoff Hueter rebuts Mayor Todd Gloria and other proponents of Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) who claim that merely increasing the supply of housing will reduce rents. Instead, as the Op-Ed points out, densification increases the cost of land and produces windfalls for land owners, particularly when San Diego couples development policies with short-sighted measures like fee waivers. Worse, these waivers disincentive developers from building on the transit corridors that are supposed to be the centerpiece of San Diego's climate action plan.
